Ariel is a fictional character and the main protagonist of Walt Disney Pictures’ 28th animated feature, *The Little Mermaid*, released in 1989. She also features in the film’s prequel television series (1992–1994), as well as in the direct-to-video sequels *The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea* (2000) and *The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning* (2008). Voiced by Jodi Benson in all official animated versions and related merchandise, Ariel holds the distinction of being the fourth Disney Princess, the first to be an non-human character, and the only princess to become a mother to her own child.
